2020-21 Wilder School Doctoral Lecture Series to kick-off Sept.10
The 2020-21 season of the Wilder School Doctoral Lecture Series in Public Policy will kick-off on Thursday, September 10, with a talk by Samuel L. Myers, Jr., of Humphrey School at the University of Minnesota.
The lecture series gives doctoral students the opportunity to learn from and engage with leading scholars in a variety of fields related to public policy. Four speakers will participate during the 2020-21 academic year, two in each semester. The lecture series is geared to graduate students, faculty and alumni of our Ph.D. program, and it is open to public.
The lecture will take place virtually via Zoom from 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Myers’ talk entitled "Race-Neutrality: Rationalizing Remedies to Racial Inequality" will be based on his most recent publication by the same title. Myers is Roy Wilkins Professor of Human Relations and Social Justice and directs the Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice. He specializes in the impacts of social policies on the poor and is a national authority on the methodology of conducting disparity studies. Myers has served as an expert witness in the groundbreaking federal case of GEOD vs New Jersey Transit (3rd Circuit Court of Appeals) and is a co-founder of the Colorado Minnesota Disparity Study Consortium, which regularly provides technical assistance to state transportation departments, airport authorities, and local transit agencies. He is also the originator of the term "the Minnesota Paradox" and co-author of the book Race Neutrality: Rationalizing Remedies to Racial Inequalities (Lexington Press, 2018).
Myers is a past president of the leading organization of policy analysts, the Association of Public Policy and Management (APPAM). He also previously served on the academic advisory board of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators and the National Council of Black Studies board of directors as well as an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. Myers holds a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
