Join us for the 2021 Wilder Symposium: “The Triple Pandemic: Implications for Racial Equity and Public Policy,” presented virtually on Thursday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. EST.

A signature event of the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, the symposium is a forum hosted by the school’s namesake, Governor L. Douglas Wilder. The event is a vibrant platform for discovery and critical discussion nationally.

Led by L. Douglas Wilder, 66th Governor of Virginia and a distinguished professor at the school, this fall’s event is based on an upcoming edited book volume, The Triple Pandemic edited by Elsie Harper-Anderson, Jay Albanese, and Susan Gooden. Speakers will examine the threefold convergence of major threats to public health, economic livelihood and access to justice during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Dean Susan Gooden will provide introductory remarks and serve as a panel moderator.

Our Wilder School faculty will present panel discussions on multifaceted approaches to examine racial equity through existing public policy as well as explore new ideas to transform change across communities. The event will include three 20-25 min. panel discussions encompassing the primary sections of the volume, addressing racial equity and public policy in three key areas with the following presenters:

Public Health - Nakeina Douglas-Glenn, PhD, Hans Louis-Charles, PhD, and Jacqueline Smith-Mason, PhD

Justice - Chernoh Wurie, PhD, Christina Mancini, PhD, and Steven Keener, PhD (CNU)

Economics - Elsie Harper-Anderson, PhD, Benjamin Teresa, PhD, and Grant Rissler, PhD

All panels will be composed of a section moderator and presenting authors from each chapter who will serve as panel participants. Targeted at academics, practitioners, and students nationally, this event will address topics such as: policing, housing, workforce development, disaster response, education, immigration, vaccine distribution, re-entry of justice-involved individuals and responses to public protests.

The symposium will take place via Zoom. A speaker agenda and link to join the video presentation will be sent to all registered attendees soon.

Please R.S.V.P. by Friday, Sept. 24 at: https://bit.ly/vcuwilder2021, as attendance is limited. We look forward to seeing you and sharing the expert perspectives of our distinguished Wilder School faculty in advance of the publication of this impactful book.
