Director of finance and administration
M.P.A., Virginia Commonwealth University
B.A., Political Science and Public Administration, James Madison University
Jacob Long is the director of finance and administration at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. Long has experience working at all levels of government: completing an internship with the town of Broadway as an undergraduate, working as a Governor’s Fellow and special assistant in Governor Mark Warner’s administration, and working within higher education for over a decade.
Long started at VCU in 2004 with the Wilder School’s Performance Management Group serving as a training coordinator and later as operations manager. He then worked with VCU’s central budget office from January 2012 through April 2016 where he managed the university’s tuition model, revenue projections, quarterly Board of Visitors reports, and served as interim budget director while a search was being conducted. He comes to the Wilder School from being the budget director for the College of William & Mary. During his two and a half years with W&M he developed a long-range projection model that allowed easy manipulation of variables to show future financial impact, and assisted with implementing a new financial reporting tool that made access to data and reporting easier for people around the institution.
